Paul Andrew Baker has provided 23 years of dedicated and exemplary service to the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS), having joined the Lauderdale Fire Brigade as a volunteer firefighter in 2001. His commitment to community safety, operational leadership, and the development of others has significantly strengthened both his brigade and the broader fire service. Paul’s leadership qualities were quickly recognised by his peers. In 2004, he was promoted to 3rd Officer, and in 2007 he became Brigade Chief, a role he has now held for over 17 years—making him the longest-serving Brigade Chief in Lauderdale’s history. Since 2013, Paul has also served as a Volunteer Training Instructor (VTI), a role he continues to fulfil. Over more than a decade, he has trained and mentored numerous career and volunteer firefighters in core areas such as structural firefighting, road crash rescue, and hazardous materials response. His influence has shaped the careers and capabilities of many within the TFS. Paul holds qualifications as a Volunteer Sector Commander and Level 2 Operations Officer, which enable him to lead and manage complex multi-crew incidents. His calm and structured approach on the fireground, along with his deep operational knowledge, make him a dependable leader during critical incidents. He is known for dedicating countless hours to both incident response and training, often sacrificing personal time to support the preparedness of others. His strong organisational approach has ensured that the Lauderdale Brigade consistently maintains a high level of readiness and capability. His focus on succession planning has also positioned the brigade for long-term success. Paul is widely respected within the Tasmania Fire Service for his integrity, tireless work ethic, and team-first attitude. His dependable support to district staff and nearby brigades, his leadership in emergency situations, and his enduring contribution to firefighter development make him a highly deserving recipient of the Australian Fire Service Medal.
