- Paul Andrew Baker:
Paul Andrew Baker has provided 23 years of dedicated and
exemplary service to the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS), having joined the
Lauderdale Fire Brigade as a volunteer firefighter in 2001. His commitment to
community safety, operational leadership, and the development of others has
significantly strengthened both his brigade and the broader fire service.
Paul’s leadership qualities were quickly recognised by his peers. In
2004, he was promoted to 3rd Officer, and in 2007 he became Brigade Chief, a
role he has now held for over 17 years—making him the longest-serving Brigade
Chief in Lauderdale’s history. Since 2013, Paul has also served as a Volunteer
Training Instructor (VTI), a role he continues to fulfil. Over more than a
decade, he has trained and mentored numerous career and volunteer firefighters
in core areas such as structural firefighting, road crash rescue, and hazardous
materials response. His influence has shaped the careers and capabilities of
many within the TFS. Paul holds qualifications as a Volunteer Sector Commander
and Level 2 Operations Officer, which enable him to lead and manage complex
multi-crew incidents. His calm and structured approach on the fireground, along
with his deep operational knowledge, make him a dependable leader during
critical incidents. He is known for dedicating countless hours to both incident
response and training, often sacrificing personal time to support the
preparedness of others. His strong organisational approach has ensured that the
Lauderdale Brigade consistently maintains a high level of readiness and
capability. His focus on succession planning has also positioned the brigade
for long-term success. Paul is widely respected within the Tasmania Fire
Service for his integrity, tireless work ethic, and team-first attitude. His
dependable support to district staff and nearby brigades, his leadership in
emergency situations, and his enduring contribution to firefighter development
make him a highly deserving recipient of the Australian Fire Service Medal.
